چکیده

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD), defined as symptoms or mucosal damage caused by reflux of gastric contents into the esophageal body, is a multifactorial disorder. Malfunctioning of the anti-reflux barrier at the esophagogastric junction, consisting of the right diaphragmatic crus and the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), is the pivotal abnormality. Other factors such as impaired esophageal clearance, decreased resistance of the esophageal mucosa and delayed gastric emptying, may contribute.

Relevance of volume and proximal extent of reflux in gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.

In patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), oesophageal and extraoesophageal symptoms are traditionally attributed to increased contact time between the mucosa and refluxates. However, the volume of reflux may be important by increasing the total amount of highly concentrated damaging substances, either by prolonging distal mucosal exposure or by expanding to more proximal areas....

Is there any association between myocardial infarction, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and acid-suppressing drugs?

BACKGROUND A link between gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and coronary heart disease has been suggested. AIM To estimate the incidence of myocardial infarction in patients with newly diagnosed gastro-oesophageal reflux disease in comparison with that in the general population. METHODS A population-based cohort study was performed in the UK. Patients aged 18-79 years with a first diagnosis...

Clinical and pH-metric characteristics of gastro-oesophageal reflux secondary to cows' milk protein allergy.

AIMS The primary aim was to assess whether there were differences in symptoms, laboratory data, and oesophageal pH-metry between infants with primary gastro-oesophageal reflux and those with reflux secondary to cows' milk protein allergy (CMPA). PATIENTS AND METHODS 96 infants (mean(SD) age 7.8(2.0) months) with either primary gastro-oesophageal reflux, reflux with CMPA, CMPA only, or none of...

GASTRO-OESOPHAGEAL REFLUX Mechanisms of gastro-oesophageal reflux in preterm and term infants with reflux disease

Background: Transient lower oesophageal sphincter relaxation (TLOSR) is the predominant mechanism of gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR) in healthy infants but the mechanisms of GOR in infants with GOR disease (GORD) are poorly understood. Aims: To measure the occurrence of TLOSR, GOR, and gastric emptying (GE) rate in preterm and term infants with GORD. Patients: Thirty six infants were studied an...

Sleep phase and gastro-oesophageal reflux in infants at possible risk of SIDS.

The association between gastro-oesophageal reflux and sleep state in 24 infants with confirmed or suspected gastro-oesophageal reflux was studied by monitoring both the pH in the lower oesophagus and polygraphic tracings made during sleep at night. Gastro-oesophageal reflux during the night was confirmed in 20 infants. Three hundred and sixteen precipitous drops of more than one unit of pH were...
